Despite his introverted nature, Matteus possessed a deep-seated passion for music and technology. At the age of 11, he made the fateful decision to pursue a career in computer science, captivated by the limitless possibilities of the digital realm. Eager to immerse himself in the world of technology, Matteus eagerly participated in computer science summer camps for teenagers, honing his skills and expanding his knowledge in pursuit of his ambitious goals.

In 1991, Matteus embarked on the next chapter of his journey, enrolling as a computer science student at the prestigious University of Bergen. As he delved into the intricacies of programming and algorithmic design, Matteus also found himself drawn to the realm of music production, experimenting with computer-generated compositions and artificial instruments to bring his sonic visions to life.

It was during his university days that Matteus began to cultivate his unique artistic voice, blending elements of dark ambient music with his fascination for Nordic mythology. Inspired by the rich tapestry of ancient legends and pagan narratives, Matteus envisioned a musical odyssey that would transport listeners to the depths of the Scandinavian wilderness.

Amidst his studies and burgeoning musical pursuits, Matteus crossed paths with Dante Stavig, the renowned leader of the black metal band Malediktum. In early 1994, as Dante struggled to find inspiration for Malediktum's highly anticipated second album, Matteus seized the opportunity to lend his expertise and creativity to the project.

Putting his solo project, Eternal Slumber of the Gods, on hold, Matteus offered his assistance to Malediktum, eager to contribute his talents to the band's illustrious legacy. On April 4th, 1995, Matteus Stein officially joined Malediktum as their new composer, keyboardist, rhythmic guitarist, and secondary vocalist, breathing new life into the band's sonic landscape.

As Matteus balanced his academic pursuits with his musical endeavors, he embarked on a creative journey that would redefine Malediktum's sound and aesthetic. In 1997, he unveiled his debut album with the band, Glemt: Forgotten Deities, a mesmerizing fusion of Nordic mythology, pagan narratives, and dark ambient textures. The album's bold departure from Malediktum's earlier sound surprised and captivated fans, earning critical acclaim for its innovative approach and evocative storytelling.

Despite the demands of his academic career, Matteus remained steadfast in his commitment to Malediktum, composing the band's third studio album, Hendesk Oppvåkning, while completing his PhD in computer science at NTNU in 2001. His groundbreaking contributions to both the fields of music and technology have solidified Matteus Stein's legacy as a visionary artist and innovator, leaving an indelible mark on the Norwegian black metal landscape for generations to come.
